Today in class we started to discuss the environmental facet
of globalization. With this we talked about population and migration. We had a
discussion about the matter of population control. There are involuntary and
voluntary attempts. I am very concerned about the involuntary attempts,
especially about the practice going on in India. In parts of India they use
sterilization to control the population.
They claim this is a voluntary attempt. However, these people are living
in extreme poverty and they are promised, food, clothes or shelter in return
for their sterilization. This is a very manipulative maneuver because some of
these people are so desperate for basic necessities that they would do just
about anything to help their families and themselves.
I found two videos off of YouTube; both were very
informative and very disturbing. In the video that I posted impoverished women
choose to get sterilized for a couple of devious reasons. First off women are
paid eleven dollars and men are paid twenty-one, it is usually the woman who
receive the operation. They are also promised by the government a chance to win
cars, motorcycles and even refrigerators. Many of these people have been lured
by these incentives. These procedures are not only immoral in the ways they’re
doing them but they also are dangerous for the women because they are not
always getting them done in safe environments.
India’s population is on the rise and is continuing to be so;
the Government believes sterilizing the poor is a good solution. In my opinion
the government should focus on supplying these women with affective
contraception methods. Whether it is condoms, IUD or pills. That are provided this
would be a much safer and more humane way, instead of making these women feel
like sterilization is the only option.
I totally agree with you, involuntary attempts, especially sterilization in India is a slippery slope... I also found it interesting while it its an easier process and promoted towards men that only 1 percent to 39 percent women who got the process done, that's very ironic. those are some pretty sickening tactics they use by paying poor people basically nothing, and promising them chances to win things as well... It really makes me glad that we live where we do!
ReplyDeleteThat's the problem with controlling populations. Those sterilization programs, whether involuntary or not, will never be successful in India. The uniqueness of their culture is based on the foundation of large family structure. These are human rights violations and it is a desperate attempt to hinder inevitable growth. Nice work! :)
ReplyDeleteThis idea makes me so angry because the governement knows they are manipulating their people. I hate that the women are the onces that have to go through the procedure as well because it is more likely for something bad to happen to them since everything is inside the body. I understand that India's population is growing at a high rate but I do not like seeing people having their bodies mutulated for $11-$21, even if it is worth more in India. I agree that we need to focus on contraceptives instead of sterilization.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your view on this 100%. It is scary to think of what is happening in India. I was surprised to hear the difference in pay between men and women. That is crazy. Also a great video to go with your topic.
